"People have been very critical of the short-runs since Tim introduced the series a few months ago. I'll admit I was the same way at first. It took a little while to make the transition from the nearly flawless 7" singles series to the not as perfect short-runs. But I did it. Tim isn't setting out to smash the ball out of the park with every release as he often did with the singles series. Basically he's happy to make it to first with hopes that the bands will make it home on their own in the future (excuse my horrible baseball metaphors, I was never very good at baseball). When judging THE PROTEENS' SR I try to look at it as Tim does, as a document of an up and coming pop-punk band in their second stage. That said I don't really think THE PROTEENS short-run is that bad. Sure it's a little derivative, maybe too derivative. But it's well played and not all too lacking in the lyrics department. THE PROTEENS show a lot of promise. They've got the talent and i'm sure that eventually they'll seem less derivative as they develop as a band. Meanwhile we get a great recording of a band in it's beginning stages. My favorite song here is 'Single Man' and 'Making Fun of Me,' both super poppy songs that show the most promise. I look forward to hearing more from the Proteens in the future." -- LEWIS HOUSTON (Vinyl-a-Go-Go website)
