Pure pop, folks! This CD rocks a blend of pure indie rock, power pop, and Elvis Costello-inspired new wave with depth and charisma. The band features ex-members of Zoinks! and Crushstory. Fans of the Costello and Buddy Holly inspired charms of folks Eugene Edwards and Frank Barajas here on this site, Big In Japan doles out more of that sumptous fare but adds a bit more biting, in-your-face rocking spunky punch. Sort of a mix of all the aforementioned artists with Phantom Planet, Maroon 5 jumbled with the rock`n roll punch of The Shazam. There are hallmarks of anthemic guitar pop, abig ringing guitar sound, some pile-driving choruses, and a special way around a big `ole hook. Big In Japan should be just that. They have developed a tasty crunchy calculus of exciting, memorable choruses, hook-riddled melodies and passionate vocals that hints of many influences from the last three decades with style, aplomb and accomplished tecnique. Grade: A-.
